Environment and Architecture Competition
Jan Bekkering I Curator - programmer I Netherlands

I am trained as a construction engineer. Still at university I started to make movies, for fun. Long ago I won prizes at festivals. A couple of years I made side programmes for the French film festival One Country One Film.
These days I am organizing short outdoor film events; we call it Film in de Buurt (Movies in the Hood). I have all the necessary equipment and I like surprising people with short movies. Just like a dj I create a programme that contains a storyline. In organizing a movie night I prefer working together with social partners. We like to choose a theme for the event, Right now I am making programmes for the Suikerzoet Filmfestival ( ‘Sugarly Sweet Film Festival’ ) in Schiedam (NL) – a competition of films shorter than four minutes. The challenge lies in showing a short film before a long movie starts. It’s a unique way of introducing short films to a broader audience.
Long ago I won prizes at festivals. I have worked for a long time in architecture, among others at Mecanoo architecten and Claus en Kaan Rotterdam. Later I started working for a contractor. Because of the different jobs, I can easily relate to all kinds of social layers of the population.vA couple of years..
